She has never bitten the children in her foster home- but a quiet home with no children will be the best match for her. She gets stressed out by too much activity in the household. She tends to get nervous when people come over and the other dogs start to bark.
Betty Lou needs an experienced Chihuahua owner—someone who is familiar with the breed’s traits and tendencies.
3-22-2019 Hi! My name is Betty Lou and I have been with my foster family for a little over a month. When they came to rescue me from the shelter, I was so scared. My people that I love and trusted had just left me there and I was so confused and sad. How could my family abandon me like that?
Well, when my fosters took me home, it took me 24 hours to come out of the corner I was in. I was so scared. But then i learned I could trust them. I slowly allowed them to pet me and it's the best feeling in the WORLD!
Now when my people want to pet me and scratch my belly, I get so excited that I smile real big and snort like a piggy. I love them so much!! But that makes me a little nervous when people come over. I want to protect them so I tend to bark at people and will sometimes run at them to try to scare them away. But my foster mama is working at helping me trust that not all people are bad. After they have been at our house for a bit, I calm down and am fine. But I will need a patient, loving person who understand me and my needs and continue to work with me.
I am only 3 years old, so I can be taught new things!! I like to fetch when the mood comes over me and chewing on Nylabones is a fun pastime for me!
I ignore all the kitties in the house and do well with other dogs. However, I do like a quiet household. When all the other doggies get riled up, it tends to make me more nervous-especially when company comes.
I would love someone who could take me on walks to slim me down for swimsuit season. It IS right around the block afterall...

2-17-2019 Betty Lou has now been with us for 3 weeks and she has become a different dog! When the mood strikes her, she loves to grab a toy, shake is around and even run after it when you throw it! We are trying to use this as little bouts of exercise for her, and we believe she may have lost a little weight so far.
She now comes to the door with the rest of the dogs to greet us and she has the most AMAZING smile when you start to pet her! She LOVES back massages and chin rubs, and her snorts and grunts will tell you just how much!
Since getting her UTI under control, she has been GREAT about going potty outside. She DOES need to be let out right before bedtime though or else she will get up in the night to go. We put a potty pad out just in case and find that some mornings she used it, despite going out before bed. When she sleeps in bed with us, this is not an issue.
We have several dogs coming and going because we also do petsitting. She does well with all dogs besides large ones. She will growl if they get too close and she feels threatened. She would do best in a home with another smaller dog OR as an only dog where she can get ALL the love.
Although she has come leaps and bounds, she still has some fear issues. When unknown people come into the house, she stands between me and the person, barking in an unfriendly manner. She has ran up to 2 people and quickly grabbed their pant legs before running away. We are working on this behavior and are confident with more time and patience, this can corrected. She needs time to know thay people are safe, and firm but gentle correction is needed.
We are so happy to be part of Betty Lou's healing, and we are hoping the perfect, chi experienced person will come along to show her how safe this world can be.
When Betty Lou came to us, we knew very little of her past. What we did know was what the shelter workers told us, which was that she was extremely frightened and didn't like to be touched. We were determined to be patient with her though and allow her to come out of her shell in her own time.
After coming to our home, she spent 24 hours, huddled in a corner. We would sit with her often, earning her trust and eventually petting her.
When she knew she could trust us, she started to walk around and even ask to join the rest of the dogs on the couch!
She has now been with us a week and she is san entirely different dog. When she is up on the couch, she comes to me and can't get close enough. She likes massages, belly rubs and gives me gentle kisses when she is happy.
Betty Lou gets along with dogs and cats, and loves our girls who are 10 and 13. Because of her unknown past, older, quieter children would be best for her.
An experienced Chihuahua owner would be preferable since she has the typical, quirky chi traits. She will need to loose a lot of weight and she sometimes snorts and grunts. She is a snorer also.
Betty Lou will be a wonderful dog for someone who wants to take time with her and help her heal from her past. She has so much love to give and just needs to know she is safe.
Betty Lou will be available for adoption the first week of March, 2019. She will continue on her weight loss program with grain free food.
